Rockstar has finally confirmed they are working on GTA 6! This is huge! They have said it’s “well underway”.
“With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series” too right we have!
We’ve rounded up some of the best information we have on release dates, leaked information and news below.
When Is the Expected GTA 6 Release Date?
Source | Information |
4Chan (2019) | Holiday 2022, or 2023 |
4Chan AMA (2021) | October 2023 |
Tom Henderson | GTA 6 launch window of 2025 |
Jason Schreier (Bloomberg) | Corroborates Henderson’s claims: “Everything Tom Henderson has said about the game matches up with what I’ve heard.” |
Jefferies | 2024, 2025 |
GTA 6 has not officially been revealed yet but it is now expected to be released in late 2023 or early 2024 with an announcement coming later this year (2022).
Later this year we should expect to see a launch video with information on location and plenty of other easter eggs just like the GTA 5 video when that first launched.
In an effort to build a better revenue model for shareholders take two recently acquired Zynga for $12.7 billion. And it’s here where things get interesting… In that report take two also revealed it expects to compound annual revenue growth to the tune of 14 percent through 2024. What on earth could increase the revenue of 14 on a company of this size? A huge game release… like say.. GTA 6!
According to an analyst from Jefferies, as relayed by Axios, there aren’t many games that would cause such a significant boost in revenue.
For context, GTA V sold 32 million copies in 2013 alone and went on to reach over 155 million copies sold as of November 2021, as reported by GameSpot. In short, GTA is a massive franchise.
Axios also spoke with analyst Doug Creutz of Cowen, who estimates the 14 percent forecast is equal to around $9 billion, which is in line with a major release such as GTA 6.
Where Will GTA 6 Take Place?
Source | Information |
4Chan (2019) | Liberty City, modern-day |
4Chan AMA (2021) | First two chapters are set in the late 1970s Miami, Florida |
Tom Henderson | Vice City, modern-day |
Jason Schreier (Bloomberg) | Corroborates Henderson’s claims: “Everything Tom Henderson has said about the game matches up with what I’ve heard.” |
We’ve seen a lot of rumors circulating about where and when the next GTA will take place, from Japan to the UK, Brazil to Miami. The one rumor with the strongest backing says that GTA 6 will take us back to Vice City, this time with a modern-day setting.
The last mainline GTA title to take place in a brand-new location was GTA San Andreas. In all, GTA games have been set in San Andreas twice (GTA V and GTA San Andreas), Liberty City four times (GTA 3, GTA 4, The Ballad of Gay Tony, Lost and Damned), and Vice City once (GTA Vice City).
Logic tells us Vice City is the next destination for GTA. Not only is it a fan favorite location, but it’s also the only GTA city that hasn’t been recreated in HD.
Dan Houser, in an interview with Polygon back in 2013, talked about how America-centric the series has been. He said, “…but that doesn’t necessarily limit it to those, that’s just what we’ve done so far.”
In a later interview with The Guardian, Houser ruled out a return to the UK: “I think there are plenty of great stories we could tell about the UK, great environments to showcase, great gameplay mechanics that could have a UK bent to them – I just don’t think it would be a GTA necessarily.”
In March 2016, TechRadar reported that Rockstar had paid a visit to Tokyo. The company’s purpose there was to collect reference shots and research locations for a rumored Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo. That project never saw the light of day, but according to TechRadar’s source, Rockstar was once interested enough in the idea of a Japanese GTA that they trademarked GTA: Tokyo in 2003.
In 2020, Reddit user JackOLantern1982 made a post claiming to be in the know about the new Grand Theft Auto title. The post (which has since been deleted) revealed 23 details, including claims about where GTA 6 would be set.
According to JackOLantern1982, GTA 6 will be set in multiple countries. They specifically named two cities: Vice City and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. They also claimed GTA 6 will be set sometime in the ‘70s and ‘80s and that weather will play a bigger role in the gameplay.
The 2020 4chan AMA leaker claimed that the first two chapters of the game will be set in 1970s Miami.
In June 2021, Tom Henderson, a tipster with a great track record for Call of Duty and Battlefield information, claimed in a video that GTA 6 will be set in Vice City.
In the same video that he leaked the GTA 6 release date, he also spoke about the setting of the new game. According to Henderson, GTA 6 will have a modern-day setting. He further ruled out the possibility that the next GTA would be a period piece in a tweet: “It’s not set in the 1980s and is modern.” Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has corroborated the claims.
So with all these leaks and rumors, it’s fair to say that it looks like we may have a vice city setting in the 70s or the modern day. We’ll update this as soon as we hear more.
What Is the GTA 6 Storyline?
Source | Rumor |
4Chan (2019) | The beginning is reminiscent of The Wire. Police officers are cracking down on a drug ring There will be a crazy plot twist and it will transition into a crime LA Noire Story that will split into a criminal side (“build-a-crime-empire thing”) and a police officer side (“traditional action game with a little twist of LA Noire”) |
4Chan AMA (2021) | The name of the protagonist is a narrative spoiler “The Family” (from GTAIV and Love Fist) will be making a reappearance Short trip to Liberty City for a few missions The mafia is in the game |
JackOLantern1982 | Players will build a drug empire and their car will function similarly to horse in Red Dead Redemption 2 (players can store their items in the trunk of their car) |
JackOLantern1982’s Reddit post went into detail about gameplay mechanics, claiming players will be able to build and manage a drug empire. This empire-building mechanic would reportedly be an expanded version of a similar mechanic in Vice City Stories but at a much larger scale. Allegedly, players will also be able to stash things in the trunk of their car.
An anonymous poster on 4Chan made a post in 2019 saying that GTA 6’s story would center around running a drug ring, supporting JackOLantern1982’s claims. According to this leaker, the main campaign will be split into a “criminal” side and a “police side”. The criminal side will focus on building up a drug empire, while the police side “is more of a traditional action game with a little twist of LA Noire.”
The 4chan leaker from February 2021 said that GTA 6 will feature “the best story ever put in a GTA game but not quite as emotional as RDR2.” They also revealed a very specific scene in the upcoming game: “You meet Ken Rosenberg and he mentions Tommy Vercetti several times although you never actually meet Tommy.”
Who Is the Protagonist of GTA 6?
Source | Rumor |
4Chan (2019) | Four main characters — two police officers, two gang members |
4Chan AMA (2021) | The name of the protagonist is a narrative spoiler “The Family” (from GTAIV and Love Fist) will be making a reappearance Short trip to Liberty City for a few missions. The mafia is in the game |
Tom Henderson | Multiple protagonists, including a woman |
Jason Schreier (Bloomberg) | Corroborates Henderson’s claims: “Everything Tom Henderson has said about the game matches up with what I’ve heard.” |
The rumors about who the main character (or characters) of GTA 6 run the gamut, from multiple protagonists to a solo female lead. Once again, Henderson has the strongest claim thanks to backing from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.
Henderson has said that GTA 6 will feature multiple protagonists. One of the protagonists will be a “tech-savvy woman,” becoming the first female main character in the history of the franchise. Schreier backed Henderson’s claims on Twitter.
The 4Chan leak from 2019 claims that GTA 6 will feature four main protagonists: two police officers and two gang members.
The 4Chan tipster from the 2021 AMA said the protagonist of GTA 6 will be “a white male, roughly six-foot-one” of Italian descent with a “sun-kissed tan” and “jet-black hair.”
According to this source, Rockstar contemplated having a female protagonist but did not go through with it because “it doesn’t fit with GTA’s narrative.” The name of the protagonist “can potentially spoil the narrative.”
Will There Be a GTA 6 Online?
Source | Rumour |
4Chan AMA (2021) | Yes; will be released several months after the single-player game. |
There aren’t very many rumors or leaks regarding the online component of the next GTA game, but considering the massive success Rockstar has had with GTA Online in Grand Theft Auto V, we’d be shocked if we didn’t see it back for the next installment. If or how it will differ from the current incarnation of GTA Online remains to be seen, but Rockstar has previously expressed rather ambitious plans for the project.
In a 2013 visit to the GTAVoclock YouTube show, Rockstar’s Leslie Benzies said the company wants to “grow this world until it’s the world.” He explained the idea was to slowly develop the game’s map over time, adding new locations and objectives “all the time.”
The 4Chan AMA leaker from February 2021 stated that the online counterpart for GTA 6 will not be releasing alongside the main game. As in the case of Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online, the online component for GTA 6 will be released a few months after the single-player game’s launch.
What Platforms Will GTA 6 Be Released On?
We know Grand Theft Auto 5 is set for a re-release on PS5 and the Xbox Series X, so you can expect GTA 6 will be released on those platforms. A PC port is almost certain, though history has shown that it won’t launch on the same date as the console editions. The PC versions of both Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 didn’t release until several months after their console counterparts — the RDR2 PC port took more than a year!
There is a silver lining for PC fans, though: Rockstar does amazing PC ports. If RDR2 and GTA V are any indications, the PC port for GTA 6 will be the definitive version of the game to play, with unique features and the highest-fidelity visuals.
