Normal-type Pokémon rarely see as much attention as other creatures in the Pokémon world. Maybe it’s because their designs are often simple or plain. It could also be because they offer no offensive advantage in competitive play. However, the best normal type Pokémon usually have a lot more to offer than you might think.
Normal is actually a very strong type, all things considered. With immunity to Ghost-type attacks and no weaknesses except for Fighting-type Pokémon, Normal-type Pokémon can stand a lot of punishment and dish out some heavy hits if given the chance.
So, let’s take a look at some of the best Normal-type Pokémon you can add to your team.
10. Ursaluna
Let’s start things off with a newcomer to the world of Normal-type Pokémon, Legends: Arceus’ Ursaluna. Teddiursa has always been a cute bear Pokémon and definitely overshadows the lesser-used Ursaring.
However, lesser-used Pokémon make for great targets to give regional forms or evolutions. Enter, Ursaluna with its unique quadrupedal design and face markings.
Ursaluna doesn’t have the best stats, being somewhat of a slow mover, as its size would imply. However, if it lands a hit, not much will be left standing afterward.
9. Silvally
Silvally may be a normal-type Pokémon but comes with the unique ability to change its type to any other it desires based on its held item.
This makes Silvally incredibly universal and considering it has equal stats across the board, you can choose to invest in offensive or defensive stats based on your preference.
While Silvally can technically be any type, if you want any chance of being competitive with this normal-type Pokémon, you’ll likely want to change it to a Fairy-type.
The Fairy type is the best type in the game, and Silvally needs that advantage to make up for its subpar stats. That being said, Silvally still has a killer design, and we wouldn’t judge anyone for adding one to their team.
8. Mega Pidgeot
The 3DS games brought us the great mechanic of Mega Evolution. When it comes to the best Normal type Pokémon, no list would feel complete without the normal type that started it all – Pidgey. Yes, technically, Rattata would fall into this category as well, but Pidgey has the fact that its evolutions are actually good!
Ash knew it, any owner of a Pidegot knows it, and we know it as well. The only thing that could make this Pokémon any better would be to give it a Mega Evolution!
So that’s exactly what Game Freak did!
Mega Pidgeot has blinding speed and special attack, able to strike first and strike hard. Yes, you have to forego an item in order to equip its Mega Stone. However, it’s all worth it for that sweet, sweet DPS!
7. Mega Lopunny
If Mega Pidgeot is the king of the best Normal type special attackers, then Mega Lopunny is the queen of the physical fighters!
Mega Lopunny has a ridiculously high attack stat, and its overall stats are quite decent overall. Add to this its Scrappy ability, and Mega Lopunny’s only downside (its inability to hit Ghost types) is completely negated!
Mega Lopunny is one of the best Normal type Pokémon out there, and you should definitely consider picking one up today!
6. Mega Kangaskhan
Mega Kangaskhan is not only one of the best Normal type Pokémon out there, but it is one of the best Mega evolutions and competitive Pokémon of all time.
What makes Mega Kangaskhan so powerful is its ability – Parental Bond. Whenever using an attack (that is not a multi-hit move), the attack will hit at 100% of its power initially and then again for 25% power.
You might not think this very much, but over time, this small chip damage adds up, and the world of competitive play knows all too well how powerful Mega Kangaskhan can be.
5. Meloetta – Aria Forme
Normal/Psychic is a very strange but powerful typing and eliminates one of Psychic-type Pokémon’s biggest weaknesses. As Normal-type Pokémon have immunity to Ghost-type attacks, Meloetta can wreak havoc unprovoked!
In this special form, Meloetta has incredibly high special attack and special defense, making it great for dishing out heavy hits while walling enemy special attackers.
However, if special stats aren’t your thing – why not try out the Pirouette Forme?
4. Meloetta – Pirouette Forme
Playing a similar yet entirely different role, Meloetta, in this form, has incredibly high physical attack and physical defense.
Meloetta – Pirouette Forme is a Normal/Fighting-type Pokémon, which is also great for eliminating one of the Normal-type’s biggest weaknesses (Fighting).
Both these forms and their added types complement each other perfectly.
3. Slaking
We all remember the terror that is Norman’s Slaking back in generation III (at least, if you didn’t have a Pokémon with Dig or Protect to take advantage of its Truant ability).
Slaking hits like an absolute truck and the only way to balance this monster of a Pokémon was to make it move every other turn.
Naturally, it is super easy to abuse Slaking in competitive play, but if you find yourself staring one down in an unprepared casual playthrough, you better pray for some misses!
2. Regigigas
If you thought not being able to do anything every other turn made a Pokémon unplayable, wait until you are essentially useless for the first five turns!
Regigigas’ Slow Start halves its attack and speed for the first five turns of any battle. Yes, it can hit like a steam train after making it over this incredibly high hurdle, but doing so is like pulling teeth.
That being said, being the king of the Regis has to stand for something, right? Regigigas can take the number two spot as a pity prize for being so damn awful!
1. Arceus
The face of Normal-type Pokémon everywhere, Arceus is the god of all Pokémon and the originator of Pokémon life who made its debut on the Nintendo DS.
Much like Silvally, depending on the plate Arceus holds, its type will change. However, unlike Silvally, leaving your Arceus as a Normal-type is a great idea, as its powerful move, Judgment, will receive a STAB bonus. It may also be a good idea to give it the Dragon type.
We got to learn a lot more about Arceus in its Switch title (Legends: Arceus), and we hope to see more of the god-goat in the future!
