It’s no surprise that the Pokemon company takes the design of their new pocket monsters seriously – after all, that’s what makes them so unique and beloved! But don’t we have to thank those odd and off-the-wall designs for establishing such a massive and successful franchise?
Sure, some of the creations look a little weird at first glance. But it’s these creations that lend the universe its fun and vibrant character. In fact, most fans even have categories for identifying Pokémon based on color, power, style, or inspiration – like ugly but lovable Pokémon!
These aren’t just characters to laugh at – they draw us in as endearing characters with personalities all their own. So never forget to show your appreciation for the Pokemon that don’t necessarily get much attention – Their creativity is what keeps this generation-spanning staple alive and kicking!
10. Victreebel
The moment I saw Victreebell in the anime TV series, I knew there was no way I would ever use a grass-type Pokemon again.
Its design is flawed; it looks like an old water jug with some leaves duct-taped onto it. Plus, this Pokemon resorts to devouring other, smaller Pokemon as part of its diet and uses acid produced by its own body to attract even more of its unsuspecting victims.
Clearly, Victoriebll was created specifically to be the bad guy in many Pokemon fan games. No matter how cute or cool the other Pokemon might be, Victeebell will always hold a special place in my heart…and never be added to my team!
9. Omastar
Omastar may have an unfortunate design, but there is still something appealing when it comes to its body and shell.
Used as a defense mechanism, Omastar’s shell is composed of rugged spikes that form a shield from predators.
While the exterior is enough to ward off any potential threats, it’s the eyes that really give away its true nature; deeply menacing, your first glance lets you know that Omastar has no intention of playing nice.
Despite its lack of style, this Pokemon once had an interesting story – forced into extinction after not being able to carry the load of its own shell, it eventually died out due to starvation. It’s definitely quite a sad end for an already amiss-looking creature!
8. Natu
Natu might be one of the most peculiar-looking Pokemon out there! It looks like a weird mix between a doodle young children make and an overweight bird, with no form factor whatsoever.
Its face is literally its entire body, and its eyes are super thin and large – definitely no beauty pageant winner here!
Natu’s color scheme doesn’t bring it any extra points either; the combination of green and red color resembles that of a watermelon in the jungle.
The only hint of different color comes from the yellow-tinted wings – except that these wings don’t help Natu at all; turns out it can’t fly. All things considered, it’s no surprise why many cite this adorable (in its own way!) Pokemon is one of the scariest ones out there!
7. Lileep
Hey everyone, let’s talk about one of the strangest Pokémon out there – Lileep! It looks like part flower, part octopus, and part tree but it really isn’t any of those things.
Frankly, when you look at this Pokemon it leaves you with more questions than answers. For starters, where are its eyes? Is it on top of the head or is it hidden in its chest? I never quite get tired of ‘guessing’ each time I come across its peculiar design.
Nonetheless, we need to appreciate the creativity gone into creating this ugly creature from years past – after all, it does have that certain charm that puts a smile on the face. Thanks for listening lads and keep an eye out for the next one!
6. Binacle
When I first saw Binacle, I thought the artist had done a really poor job with their design. It wasn’t that bad or anything, frankly, it just looked laughable.
Nothing about it resembled the real-life base they were going on–goose barnacles. Instead of seeing two claws in the rock, all I pictured were two hands sticking up in frustration at one another.
After years of Pokémon art and interpretations, I still find myself shaking my head at how this design even got approved; wouldn’t you want to create something more interesting? Despite my confusion, its ‘cute’ expressions have endeared it to me and now I’m a fan of this peculiar-looking Pokémon.
5. Bruxish
Bruxish, an inhabitant of the Alola region, is a Pokemon that definitely seems to be inspired by fish; however, calling it such would be an insult to aquatic creatures in general.
Its name “Bruxish” plays on the term bruxism (grinding teeth), but doesn’t explain its intimidating teeth or impractical Barbie-like lips.
The huge eyelashes seem intent on making this creature appear alluring in a bizarre fashion, while the color scheme of blue, yellow, pink, and purple make the design confusing at best. To sum up, Bruxish stands out as one of Alola’s oddest declarations to water Pokemon inhabitants!
4. Flapple
My opinion about dragon-type Pokemon changed dramatically when I encountered this Grass/Dragon-type creature from the eighth-generation games.
To be fair, some would say that it’s an adorable design, but if we found one of these beings in reality it would probably be a different story… After all, dragons are supposed to be legendary characters that spring from stories that have been told for centuries – not something taken from an apple!
No disrespect to apples or anything – they do keep the doctor away after all – but this hybrid species just doesn’t make me feel safe. A much better example of a dragon-type Pokemon is almost anything else, truly!
3. Dracovish
The 8th generation of Pokemon games took my love for dragons, my favorite type of Pokemon, and tucked it away in an unrecoverable corner.
If you’re confused about what generation is what, you can always check out all the Pokemon games in order. One fossil dragon type that I think was hugely ruined was Arctozolt – a potential powerhouse if I ever saw one!
What we got instead is a green body that looks like someone took a big bite out of its stomach and left it there to die. Take one look at its head, and you’ll see that it just doesn’t seem to belong on that body – intentional or not, the designers really nailed the ‘ugly’ design with this one.
It’s definitely one of the ugliest Pokemon out there!
2. Probopass
I remember when I first encountered the strange pokemon Nosepass while playing in the Hoenn region on a blissful day.
It had such an odd design and appearance that I thought I must have stumbled across an easter egg or someone had added it to the game just to play a prank on me – it looked more like a Mario villain than a Pokemon!
Little did I know that Nosepass was nothing compared to its evolved form Probopass. Having multiplied what made Nosepass so bizarre by 100, we are left with an absolute monstrosity of a pokemon, whose eyes, nose and iron fillings resemble a human mustache!
In fact, when I first saw it during battles I actually thought they were nose hairs – needless to say it’s so bad I can’t help but have nightmares about it.
That’s why nowadays whenever a Probopass appears in the game, you can guarantee that under no circumstances will this poke-enthusiast be catching it and risking those poor nightmares again!
1. Jynx
Jynx was always going to be the top pick on any list of the ugliest Pokemon, and you were wrong to think otherwise.
There’s something seriously uncanny about having a Pokemon trying to look like a human woman, which creeps me out in ways I can’t explain.
That must be why some of the most inventive Pokemon ROM hacks portray her as an evil character! I remember watching her first appearance in the anime series as a kid and being horrified; that emotionless expression coupled with those huge lips and weirdly bright-colored hair was enough to send chills down my spine.
A real Nicki Minaj moment if you ask me!
