Ghost Type Pokemon has always had a special appeal; I mean, who doesn’t love the mysterious and delightfully spooky spirits?
As the games have progressed through the generations, Ghost Types have become more and more varied, embracing the original creepiness of the type but also offering something new.
Haunted bramble, sarcophagi, and blade-wielding specters are just some of the incredible creatures you can find among these Ghost Types. So whether you’re looking for an intensely spooky battle or just a peaceful spirit partner, there’s something here for everyone.
Get ready to be spooked to your very core as we check out the best Ghost Type Pokemon for your team!
15. Brambleghast
Brambleghast is a relative newcomer to the Ghost Type Pokemon scene, but don’t let its status as a rookie fool you – it packs some serious tricks. For starters, Bramblin has an affinity for both Grass and Ghost-type moves!
In order to fully transform your Bramblin into Brambleghast in Pokemon Scarlet or Violet, you’ll need to put your Pokemon companion through 1000 steps of training.
If you make Bramblin your top priority and let it roam around the wild, it will auto-battle and find items while getting closer to its evolution.
It’s basically like being able to train your Pokemon with recall! With a few thousand steps at its belt, boom – out comes Brambleghast!
14. Hoopa
With an odd mix of Ghost and Psychic typing, Hoopa has a ton of potential. It boasts special attack and defense stats of 150 and 130 respectively, which means it can deal out some serious damage – especially since its Attack stat is still a solid 110.
Not surprisingly, Shadow Ball is one of the strongest moves it learns, however, most of its move set consist of powerful Psychic moves.
This makes it more Psychic than Ghost in some respects. Still, if you ever want to bring up the debate with Hoopa personally, think twice before doing so- you might regret it!
13. Golurk
At first glance, Golurk doesn’t appear to be one of the more impressive Ghost Type Pokemon out there. Sure, it’s huge and packs a punch, but its low speed and low Special Attack knock it down a peg or two compared to its ghostly counterparts.
But don’t let that deceive you – Golurk has an attack stat of 124 in its Pokedex entry. That’s nothing to sneeze at! As if that wasn’t enough, Golurk is both Ghost and Ground type, giving it access to Ground moves with Electric moves up its sleeve.
Its Hammer Arm and Phantom Force moves have gotten me out of plenty of tricky situations in battle – making me an unashamed fan of Golurk even if it sits comfily in the 13th spot on our Ghost Type list.
It may be a bit of an underdog but that can work as a strength too!
12. Cofagrigus
Cofagrigus has definitely got the looks to wow you! That mummy-like appearance makes it hard to forget, and its signature move the Curse is pretty cool too.
But what about in battle? Well, Cofagrigus’ defenses are its great selling feature here; with a base defensive stat of 145 and Special Defence stat of 105, you’ll be hard-pressed to make any real headway in attack.
HP and Attack might be somewhat on the low side at 58 and 50 respectively, but once Cofagrigus makes it onto your team, some Rare Candies should quickly sort that out. With this unique Pokemon on board, you’ll be laughing all the way to the Pharaoh Organ Deposit Point.
11. Houndstone
Houndstone might be one cute customer, but it’s more than just good looks.
As a reincarnation Pokemon and solely Ghost Type, Houndstone has some powerful moves up its sleeve – like Phantom Force and Night Shade.
But what really sets Houndstone apart is its Sand Rush move which doubles its speed stat during the sandstorm to 136. Attack and defense stats of 101 and 100 respectively make this pooch a force to be reckoned with in battle – so don’t let its friendly demeanor fool you!
10. Dusknoir
If you’re looking for a defensive player to add to your team, one that can take the hard hits and chip away at an opponent’s HP, then Dusknoir is your guy… ghost… ghost guy.
Although it almost looks like a haunted version of a Golurk and looks like a real hard hitter, its weakness to Ghost Type Pokemon moves would let it down in comparison to the other spooky characters on this list.
Its Defence and Special Defence stats are both incredibly high at 135, making it an ideal choice for certain strategic moves to pull out when things are getting tough. When it comes to attacking, Dusknoir has access to some really interesting Electric, Dark, Fighting, and Psychic-type moves as well as some damage-dealing Normal Moves – so combat versatility isn’t an issue here either.
Just watch out for the painfully slow-speed stat! If you give Dusknoir enough time and TLC then it could easily become a reliable ally and all-rounder on your team!
9. Chandelure
Chandelure may not be the fastest of the ghosts out there, but its Special Attack stats suggest it has enough power to tackle some of the most brutal battles. It can use Dark-type moves like Shadow Ball and Fire-type moves likes Overheat, meaning that its opponents better watch out!
Not to mention Poltergeist – an elite move used by few that is sure to turn any battle in your favor.
So even though I’m still not sure if a chandelier can truly be a Pokemon, Chandelure certainly does its best to show everyone just how tough this ‘liger’ can be.
8. Lunala
Lunala is the cool bat-like pokemon that has got every Pokemon fan excited.
It’s a Psychic and Ghost type with great stats across the board, so if you haven’t encountered it yet, then you really need to get your hands on either Pokemon Moon or Pokemon Sun and check out what Lunala can do.
It has a strong base HP of 137 as well as an impressive Special Attack and surprisingly 113 in attack too. But with only 89 defense, it needs to be careful of any tough opponents coming it’s way.
Regardless, Lunala makes for a great all-rounder and an even better team member – no stat-souping needed! So if you want to understand why everyone is talking about this intimidating creature, grab one of the popular Pokemon games now.
7. Aegislash
Being a Steel and Ghost type Pokemon definitely has its bonuses, making Aegislash a strong Pokemon that you’ll preferably want in your team rather than facing one on the field.
It’s unique in that it has two Formes – Sword Forme or Shield Forme – that it can switch between mid-battle automatically.
In Sword Forme, it pushes its defensive stats in favor of attack and Special Attack, and vice versa in Shield Forme, making it a real adaptable opponent for any battle.
Talk about keeping your opponents guessing! Some might say it’s a bit of an overall advantage clog; oh well, either way Aegislash is an incredible Pokemon and an absolute must for any avid trainer’s team.
6. Gengar
Gengar is without a doubt one of the most iconic Pokemon around, and definitely deserves the 6th spot in our list of best Ghost Type Pokemon!
It made its first appearance in Gen I as part of Ghastly’s evolution chain, making it even more exciting and unpredictable.
Not to mention that you couldn’t actually see them with just your eyes – you had to catch yourself a Silph Scope first! But despite being hidden away, Gengar made quite an impression when he did arrive on the scene; just look at his base speed stat, which comes in at an impressive 110.
He was pretty good in the Attack and Defense categories too, but with a Special Attack of 130, he was ready to make a real statement.
And if you needed further convincing then take note: Gengar has both Ghost and Poison Types working on his behalf – giving him plenty of options for dish out some ghostly special moves.
5. Skeledirge
It’s time for another newbie from the Pokemon universe: Skeledirge! This is the last evolution of Fuecoco, one of the cutest starters ever released– no wonder Fuecoco made our best cute Pokemon list!
As a Ghost and Fire Type, it can bring both Fireblast and Shadow Claw attacks to the battle. Too cool. Plus, its move pool includes Dragon and Grass moves, which really broadens its capabilities.
And speaking of capabilities, Skeledirge has some wicked stats; 104 base HP and incredible 100 defense make it a powerhouse in battles.
It could use a little help on its speed though– Gengar would be an excellent teammate in this case. But don’t forget about its high Special Attack stat of 110– yep, Skeledirge can certainly pack a punch!
4. Shadow Rider Calyrex
If you’re up to date on the Pokemon Sword and Shield Crown Tundra DLC, then you’ve probably seen Calyrex in his Shadow Rider variant – and isn’t he cool?
And powerful, too! This Psychic/Ghost Type Pokemon has a stellar 150 Speed stat as well as an awesomely high Special Attack stat at 165.
He also has access to moves from both types, making him a terrifying force to be reckoned with. If you see Future Sight being used, there’s no way you’ll be able to outrun him since that horse is fast!
Keep away from Calyrex if you know what’s good for ya!
3. Ceruledge
Ceruledge is a real standout among the Ghost type Pokemon. Armed with a sharp, spectral appearance straight out of the Zelda universe and a powerful 125 attack to match, it’s no wonder Ceruledge takes home the prize for the coolest looking Ghost type.
With moves like Phantom Force and Flare Blitz – plus the always handy Psychic moves like Psycho Cut – Ceruledge has no trouble going toe-to-toe with any of its opponents.
On top of this, this little ghost’s special defense is pretty impressive at 100 and its base speed isn’t too shabby either at 85.
All in all, it’s clear that Ceruledge is more than up for the challenge when it comes to battling among the other ghost types; be sure to give him a try if you’re looking for something extra special!
2. Dragapult
Dragapult, as you might have guessed, is a Dragon and Ghost Type Pokemon. It boasts an incredible speed stat of 142 and it has some pretty amazing abilities to back it up!
A staggering 120 attack stat combined with 100 Special Attack surely makes this pokemon a force to be reckoned with. Fans of Dragapult are especially taken with its movepool which includes Draco Meteor, Dragon Darts, Dragon Tail, Hex and Night Shade just to name a few.
With all these awesome features, it’s no surprise that people absolutely love the little dragon ghoulie!
1. Giratina
Not even Dragapult, a powerful dual-type Dragon and Ghost Pokemon can stand up against the mighty Giratina.
Any Pokemon fan would agree that Giratina is the greatest of all ghost types! Boasting staggering HP, Defense, and Special Defense stats at 150, 120, and 120 respectively, it’s as sturdy as a tank in battle.
The attack power of 100 each for both Attack and Special Attack is nothing to scoff at either; nor its bizarrely high-speed stat of 90 for such a titan creature.
Giratina has gained huge popularity ever since its debut in the Platinum version; no surprises there with anti-matter from the distorted realm making up its being and the distinction of being one of the heftiest Legendary Pokemon known to us!
Truly, what other Ghost Dragon could dream of surpassing it?
